We woke after a incredibly wet and gusty night to a wet and somewhat gusty morning. Our plan had been to go to the farm show nearby but the weather quickly put the kabosh on that, so we struggled to come up with Plan B.
Thanks to some quick thinking on the part of Fleur and others, and also some savvy negotiating, we were able to move into the lodge on the property that had only just been vacated for a minimal price. Now we had our own bathrooms, showers, and kitchen!!
The kids settled in immediately and though some of us wondered how they would manage cooped up inside all day - at least I wondered - they were relatively easily entertained coming up with skits to perform for the adults at dinner. During their non-rehearsal times they either ate or read or played games. It was an amazing thing!
The kiddos insisted that if they were to perform that we needed to do a skit of some sort as well. So we put our heads together and decided a Cinderella pantomime. Here is the Wikipedia definition of pantomime:
Pantomime traditions and conventions
Traditionally performed at Christmas, with family audiences, British pantomime is now a popular form of theatre, incorporating song, dance, buffoonery, slapstick, cross-dressing, in-jokes, topical references, audience participation, and mild sexual innuendo.
After a healthy dinner of sausages, nachos and whatever other leftovers we could rustle up, it was time to get ready for the shows.
First up we had an ancient Roman mystery. Josie and Meggie performed with this group. Katherine worked with the groups throughout the day to help sort out any issues of directorship that came up - thanks Katherine!
Following the Roman Mystery we had a comic interpretation of Rapunzel - with moldy hair!
We were ready when our turn came - and we laughed ourselves silly during practice and performance. Sadly the whole pantomime idea went right over the heads of some of the children and they weren't that impressed with our antics. They didn't understand why the boys were dressed like girls, they didn't get some of our jokes and they didn't appreciate any deviation from the story ("The mice aren't blind in Cinderella Mommy"). Nevertheless it was an incredibly fun way to end an awesome weekend. We are looking forward to next year - but before that we've already planned a mid-winter Christmas in the lodge. Good times!
